International
Credit Union Day
October 16, 2003
We invite you to
come by to celebrate the credit union “people helping
people” tradition on International Credit Union Day,
Thursday, October 16. Credit union members around the world
will celebrate this exciting event together in their individual
locations.
We’ll have
lemonade and refreshments, and RockyRaccoon will make an appearance
at 4:00 p.m. He will be on his way out of town, but has consented
to visit with his “special friends” for a few
minutes. So, kids make sure you remind your parents to bring
you by to see Rocky.
This will be your day, come and celebrate!
Your
Understanding and Cooperation are Appreciated
When an account
is opened or changed, you will be asked for your name, address,
date of
birth, and other information that will allow us to identify
you. We may also ask to see your driver’s license or
other identifying government issued documents. The definition
of an account covers a broad range of regular financial transactions
such as deposit, transaction, asset, or credit accounts or
other extension of credit. The required verification may be
inconvenient for some but a strong deterrent for terrorists
and other criminals.
You can rest assured
that we will only request the information required by the
law...and that we will use the information only for purposes
of complying with the law. Your privacy is our greatest concern,
and we will respect and protect it as always, consistent with
the law’s requirements.
Thanks
for your understanding and help in this critical effort. The
war on terrorism will be fought on many fronts, and Randy
Tyre this is one of them.

PHONE
SCAM ALERT
Some credit
unions have reported an increase in phone scams recently.
The scam usually involves having individuals call a credit
union member and identify themselves as an employee of NCUA,
IMG Corporation, or even a credit union employee or security
officer. The calls can range from calling to verify account
information as a security precaution, to offering the member
fraud protection on their account.
We, at
Altamaha Federal Credit Union, want to encourage you to call
the credit union office if you receive a phone call that you
feel is suspicious. The Federal Trade Commission has guidance
available for these types of phone scams: “If a caller
asks for your checking account number or other information
printed on your check, you should follow the same warning
that applies to your credit card number - do not give out
checking account information over the phone unless you are
familiar with the company and agree to pay for something.
If you do give your checking account number over the phone
to a stranger for “verification” or “computer
purposes,” that person could use it to improperly take
money from your checking account.” You can find this
information at www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/tmarkg/debit/pdf.
Additional guidance in other areas, such as identity theft,
travel, and investments may be found at www.ftc.gov/ftc/consumer.htm.
