From
the President’s Desk
My first
day at the Credit Union was September 1, 1973. In many ways,
it seems like that was yesterday. I can say that I have enjoyed
serving you for these 30 years. Thanks to each and every one
of you for making Altamaha Federal Credit Union what it is
today. The assets of the credit union in 1973 were less than
$1 million, today we are at $34 million. In 1973, we only
offered shares and loans; today we have multiple types of
share and loan accounts, as well as checking accounts, Visa
Debit Cards, ATM’s and cards, Internet access with our
own website at www.altamaha.org, Audio Response system, and
many more. We have come a long way!
The credit
union office was at Rayonier in 1973, in a very small office
behind what was the personnel office and the clock alley.
Members were employees of Rayonier only at that time, so we
were called Rayonier Employees Federal Credit Union. When
ITT bought Rayonier, the name was changed to ITT Rayonier
Employees Federal Credit Union. When ITT did the spin-off
of Rayonier stock, we could no longer use the name ITT. Our
membership had expanded to include several employee groups
in Wayne County. The Altamaha River flows through our area,
so Altamaha Federal Credit Union was chosen to more adequately
describe our field of membership. Due to the fact that we
were serving more and more Employee groups, we applied for
and were granted a community charter in April 1999. This means
we can serve anyone who lives, works, worships or attends
school in Wayne County and all family members.
The office
was moved to a leased building on Macon Street in Jesup in
1984 and land was purchased at the site of our present building.
The office was built in 1987, an addition was made in 1993,
and the front was expanded and refurbished in 1999. You, our
members, have been there at every step to support us, and
we greatly appreciate it. The board has approved to build
an addition to the rear of the building, and construct 4 head-up
drive-in lanes, and an ATM lane. This will begin in the next
few months and will prepare the credit union to better serve
you. Please continue to be as supportive of these changes
as you have been in the past.
I believe
that leading the credit union has been something God has blessed
me with. I want to say once again, I appreciate each of you
and hope for the continued success of Altamaha Federal Credit
Union. I am retiring effective September 30, 2003. I will
be spending more time with my husband, Foreman, our children
and grandchildren, doing more church work, some traveling,
gardening, and who knows what else! I am excited about these
possibilities, and I know I will miss ALL of you! |
